The headquarters of building contractor Jurriëns are situated in the industrial zone 'Lage Weide' in Utrecht. They are located next to the shore of the 'Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal' on one side and the Amsterdam-Utrecht railway on the other side. The company is housed in a rather unique office building, constructed in the 1960s. This beautiful, one story H-shaped pavilion, constructed of slender concrete frames, is set in a park-like surrounding with astonishing views of passing ships on the canal.
The original design of two-sided small offices with a center corridor are replaced by large flexible office areas toward the water, while the corridor is facing the railway. The corridor and offices are separated by a service zone. This zone contains all the supporting functions for the office, such as reprographic facilities, archives, focus workplaces and room for building installations.
The office area with its transparent aluminum partitioning system as well as the exposed building installations follow the structure of the building. The building was outdated and failed on multiple demands of modern working environments. Mainly, the energy efficiency and thermal comfort were a big issue. The renovation resulted in a building with high comfort and a near-energy-neutral installation.
