Östberget - An ideaIn the architecture and town renewal project
Östberget, Färgfabriken and 42/Architects have
proposed a series of ideas for how Östberget (a
small mountain facing the city centre) in Östersund
could be developed. Östberget is one of Östersund’s most visible
places. It creates a backdrop to the town square,
Stortorget, and is visible from many key locations
within the city. However, the important position of
Östberget is not sufficiently used, with skiing being
the major activity most attention, has been directed
towards accommodating the winter season, the
consequence being a shortage of activities and
accessibility during the summer months. We believe
that Östberget could be so much more, which involves
creating a place for everyone, without interfering
with the natural environment. We are interested
in a dynamic architecture which is respectful to its
context. We have asked ourselves how a responsive
and evolving architecture could contribute to raising
the value for Östberget and Östersund. Östberget
should symbolise the new and dynamic Östersund,
but also be available and interesting for more people
– Östberget as a new and important field of vision
within the town. The modern and the visionary are
intended to coexist with a strong local connection and
dialogue with history. The project Östberget is the result of an
ongoning dialogue between Färgfabriken and
42/Architects. The project is presented in the exhibition
Östberget – an Idea at contemporary art space
‘Färgfabriken Norr’ in Östersund, opening in
Janurary 2010. The aim of the exhibition is
to further debate relating to the future of the
mountain. The exhibition consists of physical
scale models, computer generated projections
and this publication which contains further
reading and images.
