Obsidian Manchester is a brand-new 26-storey tower, situated at the junction between Salford and Manchester city centre, adjacent to the emerging Greengate area, Obsidian is designed as a landmark residential building that enhances connectivity between the two cities in both form and materiality. Informed by an architectural philosophy that emphasises coherence with its surroundings, the massing of the building cascades down along the southern façade. This not only reduces the tower’s visual impact but also creates generous winter gardens and terraces, offering residents outdoor space and panoramic views toward Manchester city centre.
Obsidian embraces a material palette that is both contextual and contemporary. The regimented slimline black brickwork, contrasted with warm orange tones, pays homage to Salford's industrial past, reinforcing its presence within the urban fabric. The selected materials and intricate detailing contribute to a continuity of elegance in the façade, creating a refined quality that enriches the visual experience.
Deep-set windows, featuring decorative screens, add depth and shadow to the façade while fulfilling a functional purpose. These recessed windows enhance solar shading, improving energy efficiency and offering residents increased privacy. Furthermore, the deep reveals contribute to the building’s structural expression, enriching its robust yet graceful character.
Inside, materials and details echo the external aesthetic, with metal finishes, textured surfaces, and brick elements thoughtfully integrated to the design. This combination of exterior and interior design fosters a cohesive environment that reflects the building’s overall concept of contemporary urban living.
