Nydalsveien 28, former head office for Elkem Spikerverket, located at Gullhaug Torg in Nydalen. In 1996 invited Avantor ASA to a closed architectural competition to look at the future use of the building. Avantor ASA wanted the building to appear as modern and contemporary, and was very interested in being able to attract a large tenant. Logg Arkitekter AS (formerly KA) won this architectural competition. Ergo Group (now Everytime) signed in summer 1997 a lease with Avantor ASA for construction stage I and with an option for the construction stage II.
Phase I consisted of a complete renovation and expansion of the existing buildings. The buildings, one low-rise on 5 floors and a high-rise building of 13 storeys, have been formulated through several earlier stages. The various development stages can be read on the façade where the window axes are different. There has been added one floor to the low-rise complex and the tower block is expanded with 2 floors, totalling to 11 floors.
Phase II consists of two new buildings with the existing buildings forming a block with an inner glass covered courtyard of 32 x 18 meters. "The courtyard" is the heart of the quarter; here is a canteen, call centre and auditorium. The main challenge for us lay in creating a comprehensive system, with good internal communication, space efficiency and interaction between new and old.
For the existing buildings it was important to clean up the horizontal and vertical communication. The solution was to move the main entrance from high- to low-rise, elevators were turned so that they turn onto the main entrance and one gets a better utilization of office space and the stairs and elevators where located as central to the main entrance and within easy reach of central office space as possible.
A ceiling hung glass display was selected as the sun and noise shielding and an aesthetic element to achieve a more comprehensive facade. The existing brick façade was remodelled in a bright colour. The main facade towards Gullhaug Torg was enhanced with the new entrance, a new design of high-rise building gable, and the surface-hung glass screens.
Nydalsveien 28 now have a distant effect as a signature building that can advertise Nydalen’s distance.
