NYC Cultural CenterAudubon Terrace is a historic landmark situated on 156th Street & Broadway in Upper Manhattan. The client decided to demolish the current school and build a Hispanic Cultural Center for the Puerto Rican society of NY. The terrace is addressed with a courtyard that has no access to it through the existing building due to the slight topographical change on the site. In the new cultural center I created a green courtyard addressing the existing one on the same floor level, where the circulation space is designed around a tree coming off of the courtyard. The solar panel roof is angled towards the strong sunlight coming from the south so the building will be capable of using 20% of its own energy. The wind pressure on 156th street is coming from the ocean on the NE side of the site and therefore I enclosed it with a massive screen that is slanted down towards the street to catch the wind with its openings to the main spaces for natural ventilation to freshen the building.
