Stampfenbachstrasse

nursing home Egg/Austria

Type
Avoiding unnecessary stairs and steps might be greatest convenience for
the elderly population. Based on that thought the design develops a single
storey typology for a nursing center with an associated small housing typology
for assisted living (20 units). This site – in rural context - offers this possibility.
3 units (each 15 rooms with common living spaces, nursing facilities),
daily care-centre, office spaces, common cafeteria are arranged analog to the
grown structure of a small village. Streets and alleys, places and built
structures with adjacent gardens emerge. A church is kept in central position.
The village is also a metaphor for the individuality and autonomy of the
residents.
The design emphasis the quality and strength of individual spaces with
different proportions, light situations and neighbouring relations. The
atmospheric and spatial quality is a surplus, overbalancing pure functional
architecture.
