When a nursery school becomes part of the city.
We present our proposed idea for the reconstruction of the Markučiai nursery school – a project that goes beyond the boundaries of an educational building and acts as an investment in the vitality of the district, community ties, and a sustainable future for the city.
The project is based on four key principles: functionality, economy, sustainability, and contextual integration. This balance allows us to create a high-quality educational environment for children and, at the same time, an open space for all Markučiai residents that serves the city.
A pedestrian axis formed across the plot connects Subačiaus and Pakraščio streets and naturally leads to the main entrance. The kindergarten is not a closed object here – it becomes part of everyday movement, meetings, and district life.
The architectural idea is based on logic that is familiar to children. The volumes of the building are divided like Lego blocks, creating a cozy, playful, and easily comprehensible scale. The materials and facade solutions subtly refer to the historic Markučiai manor, while integrating modern energy management measures – from solar control systems to efficient facade elements.
The building is designed in a clear and rational manner. The first-floor halls can also be used for community needs, clearly separating them from the educational areas. This makes the kindergarten a multifunctional district center, lively even after working hours.
Great attention is paid to sustainability: existing trees are preserved, new greenery is created, and the green roof acts as a "fifth facade" – a continuation of the landscape and an additional public green space.
This project shows how preschool architecture can create real added value for the city – strengthening the community, improving public spaces, and raising a responsible future generation.
