Commissioned by the Washington State Arts Commission in partnership with the University of Washington. Fabrication by Intention Space, and designed as part of the Acrylicize team.
Inspired by the local Washington region this piece draws parallels between humanity and nature. A nurse log is a fallen tree that, as it decays, provides all the enriching elements for seedlings to grow. This is strikingly similar to the uplifting culture of care the University of Washington medical programs provide to their patients and communities. Within the courtyard of the Health Science Building, both a large sculpture and murals work together to tell the story behind Nurse Log.
As you walk through the installation there are easter eggs designed into the bark through acid etching. The mural behind the piece creates a vibrant and flourishing design that represents new growth. Designs were re-contextualized into new motifs for both murals and embedded within the sculpture.
The interior mural is Composed of over 60 distinct pieces, made of reclaimed wood, the mural illustrates the life cycle of a fallen tree nurturing a thriving ecosystem. It is prominently displayed in the lobby, integrating phrases and imagery celebrating their collective values and aspirations. The use of wood from felled trees on the UW campus adds an authentic, localized touch, connecting the artwork to its environment and context.
