In the lounge, bar and restaurant, the spaces have been extensively remodeled to create
a strong visual connection between all three areas. The design predominately takes its
cue from existing art deco details and a striking Italian terrazzo floor. The color palette of red, black and white, has been extrapolated from the floors geometric pattern, which
creates vibrancy and assists in defining the different dining experiences.
Red circular pendant lights hang over the buffet area. The punch of color provides a
striking counterpoint to the grey marble table-tops and the black bentwood chairs. The
custom-designed waiter’s stations help articulate the space, while visually tying into the existing art deco details such as the large-scale light fitting. These cubic shapes are
repeated in the open-cabinet units in the bar, and the high tables in the casual eating
area, achieving an overall sense of unity. An illuminated ribbon of mirror wraps around
the restaurant area, providing contrast to the undulating backdrop of the bar.
Collectively, Novotel’s spaces read as a diverse palette of materials, tones, textures and thematic ideas. While this creates intrigue and panache, it also pays tribute to the
building’s postmodern context.
