Buddhanimit Temple, located in Udon Thani, Thailand, is a temple school that provides free education for families who are unable to afford public education. Due to increasing number of students enrolled as novices, a new dormitory building is required. The original brief of the project calls for two-storey dormitory building under a donated 6 million baht (192,000 USD.) budget. Thorough site inspections and workshops have led the architects to propose an economical scheme to renovate existing abandoned building that leaves enough money for additional communal bath and library. Novice Living Quarters intends to produce a design that is environmental friendly, respective to context, and contributes to novices’ ways of living.
Once an abandoned building, the dormitory consists of ten shared bedrooms. The architects keep existing reinforced concrete structure and provide necessary features including translucent roof tiles for natural daylighting, large corridor for common space, and cement ventilation blocks wall designed at angle for privacy, light and ventilation.
Located behind the dormitory building is a communal bath that supports all novices within the temple. By having alternating placements of translucent and solid roof tiles, the roof is designed to evenly distribute daylight into building interiors. This results in overall improved hygienic condition with appropriate levels of natural light and airflow.
As an addition to the brief, the library is designed with raised floor to promote better ventilation, decrease humidity and cool floor surface. With adjacent school building’s wall, sunlight is reflected into library’s interior, keeping books from deteriorating and maintaining comfort to the novices.
Collaboration between monks, novices and architects made it possible for Novice Living Quarters in Buddhanimit Temple to answer beyond its original requirements. The design has carefully improved the novices’ quality of life while also allowed room for them to contribute their own individual lifestyle into character.
