The
new works at the Nova comprises 4 new cinemas, a new bar and lounge, and an
upgrade to the existing candy bar.
The
design draws inspiration from the golden era of film and cinema construction,
1930s to 1940s.
The
deco era’s interest in abstracted geometric patterning, sunburst and chevron
shapes, as well as their concurrent interest in neo-classical styling have been
re-interpreted.
The
bar uses simple classical archways to create more intimate spaces and frame
interior views, while also referencing the existing arched windows to Lygon st. The chevron zig-zagging mirrored panels give
jewel-like reflections, and the backlit marble bar and wall panels give the bar
a classic hollywood era glamour.
The
cinemas continue the Nova tradition of making each cinema unique, with one
abstracting the deco sunburst design, and another playing with another deco
obsession in circular geometry. The other two are more literally like old film
sets- a colonnaded library and a bamboo forest ready for the next period drama
or tarzan movie.
