Construction has begun for Norton Healthcare’s Norton Cancer Institute in Louisville, Kentucky, the largest capital investment for the healthcare system’s downtown campus in 10 years. The 65,000 square-foot, three-story facility will feature advanced technology for the treatment of aggressive cancers, including an integrated pediatric anesthesia suite. Karlsberger designed the cancer radiation center scheduled to open July 2011.
The facility will feature a first-floor radiation center; second-floor multidisciplinary specialty centers; and third-floor shelled-in space for future growth of cancer-related services. The building design allows for future construction of two additional floors to expand and integrate Norton’s cancer services, eventually locating all downtown Norton Cancer Institute services to the new facility.
Informed by evidence-based design, the facility will feature an interior meditation garden and an exterior healing garden.
The facility was designed to achieve LEED® certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.
