The Galter Health Sciences Library serves faculty, researchers, staff, and students of the Feinberg School of Medicine (FSM) at Northwestern University. In 2013, B+MD completed programming and planning studies for their medical education programs and library services in which existing spaces were surveyed and analyzed to determine suitability in size, technology, and quantity of rooms for meeting the needs of their new medical education curriculum, FSM 3.0.
At many universities, current learning methods emphasize collaborative over passive learning and incorporate technology to promote group learning. New learning environments at the Feinberg School of Medicine now require special classrooms with interactive audiovisual technology, such as Team based Learning (TBL) and Problem based Learning (PBL) rooms.
The updated medical education curriculum incorporates an interdisciplinary approach, such as with a recently added medical informatics program, and emphasizes early clinical experiences for students. First year students will attend TBL and PBL classes where they analyze sample medical cases in groups of 6 - 8 and solve problems based on the given data.
The existing 2 story Galter Library is currently under renovation to provide PBL classrooms and other new spaces for traditional learning methods, including a computer lab, study lounges, and conference rooms.
Another location in an adjacent building has been identified for (4) new TBL Classrooms, which will be completed under a separate budget. We are completing construction documents for that project and will proceed into the construction phase shortly.
