The Northstar residence lies adjacent to the Northstar Preserve just beyond the heart if Aspen Colorado, adjacent to the Roaring Fork River Valley. The 10,000 square foot building envelope is restricted in plan to a linear composition due topography, setbacks, and site configuration. The plan embraces the site and its topography, defining spatial orienting which maximizes the dramatic views of the location.
Capitalizing on the site topography and views of Aspen Mountain and the Roaring Folk Valley, the lower level is set into the hillside allowing the main level spaces above to be open out to the dramatic landscape. The approach to the site and house is derived in a more understated fashion allowing the internal spaces to unfold and open into the setting as one enters through the monolithic stone wall. Off this datum the play of traditional materials open to large open day-lighted spaces capped with the convex roof forms.
The defining roof elements hover over the hierarchy of the great room, sitting room and master suite, each of which capitalize on a specific view and site orientation. The large expansive windows are juxtaposed by the pervasive and massive stone walls which define the main circulation flow. The material palette is rounded out with cedar wood siding in addition to stone providing warmth to balance with the generous glazing and roof elements clad in zinc.
