Longyearbyen is one of the world’s northernmost cities. In spite of its geographical situation, the temperatures are much more high than they should be, because of the Gulf Stream. The Landscape changes according to the season. In the summer the ground is covered by tundra and blooming arctic cotton and in winter it is completely covered with snow. The simple wooden constructions around the site, especially colored houses, participate in the shaping of this authentic landscape. The building is lifted from the ground for a better protection against the snow, like the neighboring constructions. The reserves, garages and the technical rooms are at the ground level floor. All the rooms have a privative terrace and the project offers 3 types of external spaces :1. Interior observatory on the 3rd Floor with 360° view, from where one can observe the aurora borealis in protected environment ;2. Exterior viewing roof terrace around of the telescopic observatory ;3. Privative terrace in front of every room.
