Gresham Smith International Airport (ORF) in Norfolk, Va. The design improvements serve to relieve security-screening congestion and create a more modern, bright and vibrant space that supports the airport’s future growth and success. Highlights include a 10,000-square-foot departures-building skylight, expansion of Concourse B’s security checkpoint, new escalators, new terrazzo flooring and life-safety enhancements. Construction of Phase II interior renovations designed by Gresham Smith is expected to complete in Spring 2016.
“We are extremely pleased with the results of the first phase of renovations at Norfolk International Airport,” said Wayne Shank, executive director at Norfolk International Airport. “These improvements greatly enhance both the aesthetics and function of the terminal facilities and provide a much more pleasant and convenient travel experience. The ORF staff looks forward to working with Gresham Smith as we undertake the next phase of renovations which will result in additional travel conveniences while, at the same time, extending the life of our passenger terminal complex.”
“The Gresham Smith design team has enjoyed working with the Norfolk Airport Authority to realize the first phase of their terminal modernization program,” commented Wilson Rayfield, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, architecture principal at Gresham Smith. “The new checkpoint will provide increased capacity to support long-term passenger growth. We’ve also strived to create an atmosphere that’s appealing to travelers with a design direction that is fresh, efficient and energetic. The Phase I improvements are a major achievement that we are proud to have been a part of, and we also look forward to the completion of Phase II as it begins construction this summer.”
The new skylight provides a large source of natural light for a more open and spacious environment in the departures building, and also helps maintain the health of the lush interior landscaping. The expanded security checkpoint in Concourse B reduces peak-hour congestion and accommodates advanced screening technology. New terrazzo flooring and escalators in the departures building help to modernize the space, making it brighter, cleaner and more durable.
