Re(building) Rotterdam(watch 3D animation movie here)Rotterdam has lost his heart because of the intense bombing by the German air forces during the first days of the Second World War in the Netherlands. The whole city-centre was destroyed, only the first European skyscraper (Witte deWith) and the Laurens-church remained. After the capitulation in 1945 plans for rebuilding this heart were undertaken. Monuments were build to commemorate this great loss and to start the new phase, but no heart ever came back and even these monuments were eventually displaced and neglected. Just like the old Willemsbrug, adjacent to my project site. This bridge was the one object which reminded us of this sad event; Dutch soldiers shed their bloods there to protect our freedom. It was destroyed and replaced by a ‘modern’ bridge in the eighties. The building we had to redevelop for this concept proposal was the first building build in the rebulding period in the 1960's following the war destructions, in what was to be the newly constructed heart. With our proposal we want to show that Rotterdam has to preserve its memory. Therefore this design aims to redevelop such a monument of reconstruction by means of showing the importance of these apparently neglected aspects. It tries to activate the old building through the regime of complexity, because this mobilizes the full intelligence of architecture and its related fields. We densify the empty space. We propose an embracing envelope that defines space. At the same time we want to embrace this monument and let it be a starting point for a new approach; a sustainable approach that uses activation of people to gain power and awareness. This activation leads to defined place, as vectors activate spaces.
