Noir Matière is a penthouse interior project designed by Boobrook for a private client at Lana Residences, Dorchester Collection, Dubai. Recently completed, the project explores the relationship between materiality, light, and spatial perception within a high rise residential context. The design focuses on creating a controlled and cohesive interior environment that contrasts with the surrounding urban landscape.
The project is based on a study of contrast between raw material expression and a calm, introspective atmosphere. The design approach reinterprets principles associated with brutalist architecture through a refined interior language. Emphasis is placed on the use of materials, proportions, and light, rather than decorative elements.
The name Noir Matière refers to both the material palette and the role of darker tones in shaping spatial experience. Darkness is used as an active component within the design to define depth, frame views, and influence the perception of scale.
"The project was developed as a balance between material presence and spatial clarity," explain Benjamin and Natacha Bouioukliev, founders of Boobrook. "Each decision was made to reinforce a consistent atmosphere throughout the interior."
The interior is defined by a limited palette of materials including polished concrete, blackened oak, oxidized steel, textured plaster, and deep toned stone. These materials are selected for their natural characteristics, textures, and ability to interact with light.
The restrained palette allows natural and artificial light to play a central role in the project. Daylight enters the space and highlights variations in texture and surface depth. In the evening, indirect lighting is integrated to maintain a consistent and controlled atmosphere. The lighting strategy supports the perception of continuity across the different areas of the penthouse.
The layout is organized to maintain fluid transitions between spaces while preserving a clear hierarchy of functions. The design minimizes visual fragmentation by reducing the number of materials and details. Openings, circulation paths, and volumes are proportioned to create a balanced and coherent spatial sequence.
The project avoids applied ornamentation. Instead, emphasis is placed on construction details, surface articulation, and the relationship between solid and void. This approach allows the interior to maintain a consistent identity throughout.
Located at Lana Residences, Dorchester Collection, the penthouse benefits from elevated views of Dubai. The interior design establishes a contrast with the external environment by creating a more enclosed and controlled atmosphere. This approach allows the interior to function as a retreat within a dense urban setting.
Noir Matière presents an interior design approach focused on reduction, material consistency, and controlled use of light. The project demonstrates how a limited palette and precise spatial planning can define a cohesive residential environment.
