Bernat and Claudia’s Home – A Comprehensive Interior Renovation Project in the Sants Neighborhood, Barcelona
When the renovation process began, the apartment exhibited the typical characteristics of flats located in buildings constructed in the 1960s:
high compartmentalization, small and dimly lit spaces (most rooms ventilated through inner courtyards), and a layout lacking a clear spatial hierarchy.
From the outset, the primary goal of the intervention was to optimize the spaces to create a more open and brighter environment.
To achieve this, the entire central layout of the apartment was reconfigured, integrating the former hallway and one bedroom into the dining area to create a spacious living room with an open-plan kitchen.
To unify these spaces, structural modifications were made to the load-bearing walls. This led to the creation of a portal that, from the kitchen, frames the living room and opens all the spaces toward the balcony overlooking the square and park.
Next to the new living room, the layout was further improved by adding a second bathroom (previously, there was only one), including an en-suite bathroom accessible from the master bedroom.
The other two, smaller rooms were transformed according to the owners’ needs into home offices for remote work.
The design and visual aesthetics of the apartment received special attention: Claudia, originally from Valencia, wanted a home filled with color and personality that reflected her character.
For this reason, variations in color are frequent throughout the apartment.
The color palette includes both warm tones, such as the terracotta of the en-suite bathroom and the reds in the kitchen and sofa, as well as more soothing shades, with the blue of the master bedroom and the green of the main bathroom.
The standout feature in the color scheme is the large kitchen countertop and backsplash, finished in white and multicolored terrazzo.
The tactile aspect was also emphasized, with the mineral-textured marmorino finish applied to the walls in both the living room and the master bedroom.
