Redefining contemporary banqueting with a fusion of Kolkata’s heritage and modern design.
Banquets are essential social anchors in our communities, transforming into spaces where significant moments of life unfold - from weddings to cultural ceremonies. These venues, especially vital in South Asian communities, preserve traditions across generations while weaving social fabric through shared celebrations. In diaspora communities like Salt Lake City, such spaces bridge cultural identities and maintain heritage connections while embracing contemporary life - it is against this backdrop that Nishtara sets a new standard for contemporary banqueting with its visionary approach.
Drawing inspiration from Kolkata’s identity as India’s first European city, alongside elements of its temple architecture and the Bengal School of Art, the design blends Gothic and Romanesque styles with the city’s rich local heritage, creating a unique fusion that reflects both cultural legacies. The design incorporates cross-vaulted ceilings and intricately detailed columns, carefully weaving historical elements from Kolkata’s architecture into a modern hospitality space to create a dialogue between the city’s rich past and contemporary identity.
Tailored spaces for unforgettable events, designed for comfort, privacy, and flexibility.
The design focuses on creating a space that meets the practical needs of a modern banquet facility while enhancing the experience for both hosts and guests. The layout is carefully planned, including a pre-function area, the main banquet hall, supporting spaces such as bridal rooms with lockers and makeup facilities, green rooms, and well-positioned toilets. Every detail ensures privacy, convenience, and ease of access. The banquet hall accommodates 100–200 people, with a flexible layout that allows for smooth movement and adaptability to different events.
Plug-and-play design for effortless setup, adaptability, and enduring style.
Unlike banquet facilities that rely on temporary setups for each event, the design incorporates permanent infrastructure to streamline every aspect. From lighting and sound to décor, everything is plug-and-play functionality. A metal grid system is integrated into the ceiling, allowing a quick and efficient installation of lighting, décor, and other elements, eliminating the need for time-consuming temporary structures. This thoughtful approach ensures smooth operations for any event while preserving the space’s aesthetic integrity and adaptability for personalisation.
Bespoke chandeliers and terrazzo flooring tell a story of craftsmanship and culture.
A standout feature of the space is its bespoke chandeliers, inspired by the Bengal School of Art. These handcrafted pieces are striking focal points, weaving cultural storytelling into the design. This narrative also finds expression in the terrazzo flooring supplied by Pidilite, which mirrors the cross-vaulted ceilings and intricate patterns above. The flooring is chosen for its finish and durability, complementing the custom carpets by Obeetee that echo the same motifs, creating a flow and connection with the earthy tones throughout the interiors.
A material palette that fuses cutting-edge technology with timeless artistry.
The interiors boast a warm, earthy colour palette that creates a cosy, welcoming atmosphere, effortlessly complementing the space's grand scale. This balance results in an aesthetic that feels both refined and approachable. The design seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology, combining the precision of CNC machining with the artistry of hand-finished detailing. Rubberwood boards form the profiles, shaping cross-vaulted ceilings and intricately detailed columns that flow into one another, creating visual continuity across two dimensions and lending the space its understated yet grand character.
Bridging heritage and innovation to create spaces that honor the past and inspire the future.
The project is a testament to the thoughtful integration of tradition and technology, where each aspect is curated to honour the past and embrace the future. The space, thus, becomes timeless and relevant by reinterpreting Kolkata’s architectural and cultural heritage within a contemporary context. With meticulous detailing, thoughtful planning, and cultural resonance, the project stands out as a shining example of how design can connect the past to the present, creating meaningful, memorable, and enduring spaces.
