Nippy Pop-up is a project for designing a semi-permanent coffee shop space. We received a brief to create a coffee shop located in an outdoor food court in Chiang Rai. The shop must be designed to be dismantled and relocated to different sites while adhering to a limited budget.
“Outstanding from context” is the first perspective in designing this project. In the same area, there are other shops, and we cannot control the surrounding atmosphere. Therefore, the design is based on the idea that the shop must be eye-catching but not overly disruptive to the context. The first step was to design the building with a taller proportion that weaves through the tree canopies to attract attention and the building must be transparent, blending harmoniously with its surroundings, allowing light, shadows, and foliage to intermingle with the structure.
“Detachable building” is primarily constructed from scaffolding, an easy-to-form material that can be disassembled. We designed a scaffold frame measuring 4x4 meters and 3 meters high, elevated above the ground with the fewest possible posts. These posts are set back inside the shop to enhance the feeling of being suspended.
“Material selection” consists of basic materials that can easily be purchased from a regular construction supply store to help control the budget, such as scaffold frames, lightweight wall materials, plywood, and tarps.
“Color scheme” was developed after achieving the feeling of lightness from the scaffold structure, using shades of light blue to contrast against the green background of the trees and surrounding context, making the frame stand out. The lower elements feature exposed lightweight bricks painted white to serve as a canvas that complements the blue and the plywood used for the counter.
“Tarps” are utilized by stretching white waterproof tarps along the scaffold framework to create shade and add dimension to the facade. They also help conceal the main structure roofed with polycarbonate sheets to protect the coffee bar from rain.
All elements have been organized to create a new outdoor coffee shop under the Nippy coffee roaster brand.
