Intro
During the design process of Ningbo Hangzhou Bay Hospital project, we started with the relationship between the hospital with city, function, garden, etc. Focus on human experience and develop a healing environment that looks forward to the future and take care of people.
Hospital in city
Hangzhou Bay Hospital is located on the south bank of Hangzhou Bay, which is in the northern part of Ningbo City. It now is the only fully equipped large-scale general medical facility in Hangzhou Bay New District, which makes the hospital carried a heavy responsibility to the local citizens. Different from the new district’s pursuit of economic fast raising and rapid development, architects attempt to create a relaxed and pleasant urban public space with unique local cultural intention in the site.
The main body of the hospital is composed of three parallel volumes, with a clear spatial structure. Outpatient and emergency department clearly visible along the city streets. Medical technical departments as the core of hospital are located in the center of the site. And inpatient tower arranged along the river side. Three parallel inpatient departments are connected by the main and secondary medical streets. The main street covered by a semi-shaded glass roof, which is convenient for people to locate in the hospital.
The arc wall introduces the hospital to the city. The arc wall envelops the volume of outpatient department, and the densely-shaped windows emit warm yellow light at night, which gives people a feeling of warming arm. The two-story “box” interspersed in the middle serves as a communication space for care givers to speed their leisure time. The science and education building “lifted” by the arc wall which provides a dynamic balance for the whole volume and creates an active urban atmosphere.
The main body of the hospital is controlled under fourteen floors, which is considered to be the best balance point between building height, building density and the efficiency of medical treatment under this building scale. Three inpatient towers share the sky terrace between their volume, which makes them easy to be identified.
Hospital in hospital
The project combined a general hospital and a woman and children hospital. These two functions have some clear difference and some internal relationship. How to deal with the ambiguous relationship is the main starting point during the concept phase.
This functional logical relationship is hidden by the architect in the general structure of the building. The two hospitals are set up separately and face different streets to separate patients with different needs. The medical main street is used to connect the outpatient and medical technology functions of two hospitals. Each department adopts a modular layout, which can flexibly respond to the development of future medical needs. Two secondary streets connect the outpatient, medical technology and inpatient functions of each hospital. This forms a complex system that is both interconnected and effectively diverted. Large-scale medical technology facilities and support facilities, such as the surgery department, taxi drop-off connection system, and other functions can be shared centrally, and specialist outpatient clinics and medical technology can be effectively diverted.
In the design, the operation department is arranged on the same floor with the ICU of the general hospital and the delivery rooms of the maternity and child care service center, and is directly connected through clean passages to form a "heating layer". This arrangement simplifies and shortens the flow of people and logistics, and uses the stability of horizontal traffic to ensure the efficient operation of medical treatment, while avoiding mutual interference between the healthy (puerperia) and patients.
The three-dimensional traffic connection system is centrally set on the first basement level of the hospital. It adopts a one-way circulation traffic streamline organization and guides the vehicles in and out of the hospital through the sunken courtyard. Visitors who arrive at the hospital by taxi or private car can easily reach the drop-off area on the first basement level, and directly reach any unit through the connection hall and the main medical street.
Hospital in garden
The garden to the hospital not only has the practical significance of creating a healing environment, but also has a sense of the future that leaves the hospital with room for development. The gardening of Hangzhou Bay Hospital can be divided into two levels: macro layout and micro building space.
From the macro, a centralized layout is adopted to create a three-dimensional entrance garden with a sunken courtyard on the east side of the building, and form a centralized garden on the west side. This semi-enclosed garden faces the corner of the city, allowing the hospital staff and the public to enjoy the quiet environment. At the same time, the inpatient wards with residential functions will be arranged along the river, and the first floor will be elevated to introduce the riverside landscape into the hospital, so that patients and medical staff can enjoy the rare peace in the downtown.
Form the micro in building space, the architects implanted fifteen daylighting patios into the building and underground space, which created a micro-environment full of sunlight, fresh air and ecological greenery for local functions. The sky terrace garden on the building's facade provides a space and fresh air for patients on all levels to share and communicate. In addition, the architect adjusted the window sill of the ward to 500 mm height, which is convenient for patients lying on the bed to look out of the window and get a larger view angle, and also conducive to safety and energy saving.
Epilogue
Working on healthcare design, architects always face the challenges of complicated and objective contradictions in all aspects. In addition to discussing various design contradictions rationally, architects should always put "people" in the most important position of the design to give patients, doctors, nurses and other hospital users more care, warmth and hope.
