Shortlisted for Expression of Interest

Taking cues from Collingwood’s rich industrial history, this playful and character-filled design solution was developed as an expression of interest for a new headquarters for iconic sports brand Nike. A detailed brief outlined the client’s requirements – a 5000-square-metre purpose-built headquarters, with a cafe, a combined loading bay and warehouse space that could also act a showroom for private retail events, and office space for Nike’s high-performing team.

The concept retains much of the existing factory facade, using polycarbonate panels to infill gaps. While the lower portion of the walls has a custom graffiti finish – in keeping with its urban/industrial location – the upper portion gives way to a new built form extending two floors above the original shell. A complex assembly of vertical and horizontal fins creates a feeling of movement while also offering sun control.

A low-key entry steps through into an expansive internal void. This open space connects the building’s interiors, with large porthole windows looking down from the spaces above, access to the central circulation route that winds through the space, and an in-built rock-climbing wall. Alongside the reception area, a timber staircase doubles as an amphitheatre for informal team meetings or events. Atop the four floors, a multipurpose roof space acts a breakout area for staff, yoga studio or event venue.

The project takes a playful approach to materiality. Translucent polycarbonate walls on the change rooms cast silhouettes of those within, while brick, timber and neon lighting create a contemporary warehouse feel. The design treatments clearly delineate the existing elements from the new additions.
