Nido Inside Out
Milan, Italy
The project transforms a ground floor apartment in the historic center of Milan into a private nursery facility, trying to nurture the two souls of the place: the pedagogical project and the residential building classic identity.
The challenge relies in designing a place that is simultaneously supportive of an innovative pedagogical approach (focused on children learning processes and relations-building. in the age group form 0 to 3 years old) and the relation with a strongly characterized environmental context (a traditional nineteenth-century home for the High Milanese bourgeoisie, with a cultured, consolidated language).
The identity of the existing building has been respected and valued, restoring the existing doors and windows, the niches with a seating, decorations and stuccoes and, generally, maintaining the full white color of the rooms. A white color that highlights the glimpses of city through the windows, the austere stone and green trees. In short, the ‘shell’ remains linked to the identity of the building, while the project adds a functional and an aesthetic layer. The ceilings are emphasized with pastel colors inside the decorative stuccoes and frames, that, by the way, tell stories of old different layouts. Some printed wallpapers and glass partitions equipped with color semitransparent patterns are entrusted to define the color identity of the rooms, with the important help of furnishings. The furnishings play an important role in defining the activities and in completing the material and chromatic identity of the space.
