For the NICOLEHOLLIS studio, we desired a "white canvas" where we could clear our minds of daily clutter and focus on a creating a new concept for each and every design project. The studio is a 10,000 sq foot former industrial space located south of market (SOMA) in San Francisco. With its natural light and minimalist sensibility, the studio acts as a laboratory where we can experiment. It is important to keep the studio uplifting and inspiring.
To design the studio we opened the space by removing several walls and retained the original high ceilings and authentic steel windows. This brought in the views, which stretch from the Bay Bridge to Twin Peaks, to reflect the nuances of San Francisco light throughout the day.
The central work area is open and with custom white workstations built with standing desks. The concrete ceilings are painted white. The decorative Fontana Arte Dome pendants give a glow that complements the light and space. The floor is poured concrete, which flows throughout the space. Small meeting places are located throughout.
A dramatic entry salon with hand-applied Italian integral color plaster walls is styled in the manner of a residential living room with a marble fireplace and hanging pendant by Bec Brittain.
The reception desk is Nicole's ode to Donald Judd – a brass-clad box. The kitchen is set up with a custom designed island designed to invite socializing. The dark surfaces and a bleached metal backsplash picture the all white space.
