Nickel & Nickel Winery represents a farmhouse
complex that acknowledges agricultural history in the famed Napa Valley, as
represented by the Gleason Barn and Fermentation Barn on-site. In addition, the century-old Sullenger
Farmhouse denotes a historic landmark in Oakville, California. The restored Gleason Barn houses the administrative
offices of the winery. As the
newest structure on-site, the barn was built circa 1770 in New Hampshire and
was transported and reassembled at the winery. Exposed preserved timber beams and cabinetry combined with
glass, steel, stone and concrete elements inside the barn demonstrate a
structure true to its period and enhanced using modern technology. This mixture of old and new is carried
into the Fermentation Barn, where exposed timber frame, stainless steel
fermentation tanks and aluminum catwalks inside the barn reflect the working
winery aspect of this farmhouse complex.
Exterior board-and-batten siding, stone stem wall, dormers and sliding
wood barn doors further accentuates its agricultural style. An underground barrel storage in the
cellar is also highlighted by vaulted ceilings.
