The project is Located in Shenzhen’s Upper Hills, a city shaped by the convergence of Chinese and Western cultures in modern times and deeply influenced by the Nanyang heritage, say continues the narrative of the "rice house," grounding the space in the idea of home—a response to the city’s openness and inclusiveness. This is not about opening a store, but about making a home.
The little white building is imbued with the spirit of Nanyang. Its terrazzo base, louvered windows, and cast-iron railings are all modern interpretations of the culture. A cantilevered, perforated canopy extends outward, subtly concealing the original ventilation openings on the façade while restoring a sense of visual calm. At the same time, it lifts the elevation, adding a quiet sense of shelter—like an extended eave.
Near the northwest corner, the side entrance is subtly recessed. The structural column helps naturally form a transitional entryway. Cast-iron railings trace the boundary, where greenery grows quietly and a white bench receives the warm glow of a wall lamp. The gesture softens the rigidity of the structure and extends the threshold of home—a place to pause, to sit.
Stepping through the main entrance brings you into the heart of the home. Wood veneer extends to the ceiling, shaping a breathing space reminiscent of a Nanyang arcade atrium—drawing the gaze inward before releasing it outward. Louvered elements run throughout the interior, from the wall panels to the cashier backdrop, lending a quiet continuity. Metal clothing rails, warm wall lamps, and understated timber finishes together compose a serene spatial atmosphere.
Light defines the spatial hierarchy. Garments take center stage, with illumination focused on the rail areas, while the rest of the space remains warm and softly dim, creating a clear visual layering. In the corner, a mirror, clothing rail, and small wooden bench capture the quiet ritual of changing clothes at the entryway upon returning home.
This little house is both a quiet presence within the neighborhood and a place to return to at any time. A good meal awaits. say hopes that everyone who steps through the door finds, beneath this roof, a sense of calm and belonging.
