The idea
behind this intervention was the research of a playful, flexible and cozy space
that will follow the growth of a very young child. His parents decided that he
could move his bedroom in this space, connected to their large residence, in
this old attic under the roof and have his independent apartment. The place was
really dark and the ceiling heights seemed even less due to the close series of
large wood beams of the structure; two large square columns where marking the
space in the middle of the room.
The
necessity of creating a multipurpose room without interfering with the original
structure was the starting point for the creation of this “theatrical set” in
which the cuts in the plasterboard wall are like free clouds, or like I like to
think the 1970s French
cartoon Barbapapa’ by Annette Tison and Talus Taylor, (if you know or do not know the cartoon story
you might want to check it out and you’ll get further hints regarding the
meaning of this concept) without any sharp corner and reachable by Nic in any
condition. What seems just a free playful and maybe arbitrary gesture had a
very deep study behind regarding the structure, placing and perspective heights
of each curvature and the correct distance within the edges so to insert the
glass shelves within each cloud.
The two
central columns were roundly coated as well in plasterboard and as everything
painted in white which become a fundamental choice to increase the perception
of the space and to be a neutral background so not to compete with the colors
of the toys and the kid objects. The clouds are lighted by tiny led inserted in
the structure. The bed is on the right side of the free space looking to the
outdoor. The project was completed with the major renovation of the two bathrooms
of the parent apartment below.
