In 2016, DRG Architects attended a program at Rutgers University to learn about the University’s Rutgers 2030 Physical Master Plan. At the end of the event, the hosts encouraged the involvement of local architectural firms by inviting them to bring forward ideas that could improve the Master Plan.
Nexus on the Raritan River is a proposed enhancement to the Master Plan pedestrian and bike bridge. The new concept transforms the pedestrian bridge into a public park suspended above the Raritan River. Nexus connects the Master Plan’s proposed Campus Quad and Transit Hub in the College Ave district to the Busch and Livingston districts, High Point Stadium, Johnson Park, and Rutgers Ecological Reserve. In additional to unifying Rutgers University, the proposed project will encourage circulation between the University districts, the river front, and the City of New Brunswick. Nexus will be an iconic destination - a celebration of the Raritan River as a valuable resource and its integral role in the area’s history and development.
The suspended, circular park features a transparent bike/walkway, wooden boardwalks meandering around grass lawns, and plenty of park bench seating for relaxation and river views.
Nexus’ soaring white cables, support structures, and central ring appear to float above the Raritan. The structure spans the river, supported only from its banks, accommodating the river’s natural flow fluctuations while leaving it untouched.
Nexus on the Raritan River will “provide a visual, spatial, and textural link to the cultural heritage of the city. This pedestrian bridge sits lightly in its environment and its expressive elemental forms create a powerful architectural identity that will forever represent, validate, and celebrate the history of the river.”
