Nexus data center is the first built realization of the Green Energy Park on the Research Park in Zellik. Green Energy Park is a collaboration between VUB, UZB and Ghelamco with a view to further developing the Research Park into a Flemish testing ground where the gap between knowledge, innovation, research and practice is narrowed and all actors can work together on the solutions of tomorrow.
The Nexus data center will fill the large data needs associated with the research and hospital. The Nexus data center has been developed as the greenest data center in the country. Nexus will provide heat to all buildings (existing and new) through its connection to a low-calorie heat grid, so that the entire Research Park can be made climate neutral by 2030.
The Nexus data center has a capacity of 7.2 MW of IT load distributed across 17 white-space modules. The module can accommodate both medium-density and high-density data servers. Nexus will also house the new Flemish Supercomputer starting in 2025.
The Nexus data center is the first triple - certified data center in our country, Uptime institue tier III by design, Breeam excellent, Egde Advanced.
In order to make economical use of the available space, Nexus is a stacked data center. At the bottom are the central safeguards, electrical power supplies and the interconnection to the heat grid. The ground floor houses the offices and educational space connected to the supercomputer. Above that, spread over six floors, are all the white spaces with the corresponding technical installations (transformers, electrical power supplies, ups and battery row. On the top floor, all cooling installations are provided (heat pumps, adiabatic coolers). The south facade is completely covered with solar panels that cover about 5% of the electrical consumption of the data center.
The entire structure of the Nexus data center consists of post-tensioned on-site cast in situ concrete in order to realize the heavy floor loads (2 kN/m²) in an optimal thickness. This solution made it possible to gain a lot of height per floor, resulting in significant savings in materials and money.
