You have probably heard of Wall Street; its name rings a crowded and active bell in our minds, with long queues and compact spaces filled with people. For the past few decades, the increasing population and the undeniable mental and psychological impacts of living in flat, cubic, small, and similar-looking apartments, away from the natural landscapes and greenery that also limits the social interaction among the citizens, has become one of the major concerns of governments in big cities around the globe.
To find an architectural solution for this issue and design rental residents in close connection with the natural landscape that encourages social activities was our main goal in the New York Bridge project. At Kalbod Design Studio, we picked Manhattan’s financial district, which dire needs low-cost small rental residents for businessmen and businesswomen staying in New York for a short period to do business.
New York’s Suspension Bridge connects the financial district of Manhattan to the green areas of New Jersey above the Huston River. It creates a magnificent view of the Statue of Liberty on the North Atlantic Ocean.
This bridge is designed on two levels; one is located 35 meters above the water surface and provides an impressive panoramic view. The lower level is 25 meters high above the Hudson River to function and provide safety against rising sea levels. This level is designed to give an amusing path for pedestrians, bikes, scooters, and other clean vehicles such as smart electric cars. This level also offers multiple gathering spaces for people to come together, a great view from both sides, and enjoy artistic performances or exhibitions. A massive body of vegetation also attaches both pathway levels.
To control the weight and dead load on this bridge without blocking the fantastic view of the existing buildings on both ends, the structure comprises small intersecting trusses along the entire bridge to keep the pathway levels connected. In contrast, an oblique beam controls the main load. We turned this beam into a residential tower to take a step forward and add an extra function to this massive beam and provide small, low-cost rental units for short stays in this area and also to make sure this solid tower will not turn into other million buildings of New York and does not block the view we turned it into a massive ring with near 600 meters diameter.
This Ring-like structure is our architectural answer for the lack of low-cost rental units that many visitors seek in this dynamic neighborhood. This massive ring-like tower comprises hundreds of micro units providing a low-cost place to stay with an impressive view of the Hudson Bay in New York and New Jersey. For those businessmen and businesswomen, these units will make them forget about their previous stays in New York and give them a new experience of the surrounding natural environment.
To make their stay more exciting, this massive structural ring is completed with a 360 degrees rotating layer of large meeting rooms that will go around the ring’s perimeter two times each 24 hours. This exciting structure will provide rental meeting rooms that move from 600 meters above the ground deep into the Huston River water and become another New York City business and tourist attraction.
New York Bridge is around 1.2 kilometers long, and the massive ring-like residential tower located precisely at the last 300 meters of it, closer to New Jersey, has lower prices for residential units compared to New York and makes travelers’ stay much less costly and way more exciting.
