dD+P and its design team provided full architectural and engineering services in a collaborative effort to restore and reimagine the exhibit spaces at the New York Aquarium that were damaged during Hurricane Sandy.
dD+P worked with the WCS Exhibit Graphics and Design team to transform these exhibit spaces to facilitate learning and play for the Aquarium’s youngest visitors and their families. Immersive, habitat play spaces prompt visitors to take on new perspectives, inspiring an affinity for marine wildlife and for discovering the natural world.
Fostering inclusivity and access were key considerations in the project’s design. Design approaches included developing an inclusive and informative illustration style for exhibition graphics, creating spaces for facilitated learning, and providing bilingual interpretation on all signage.
dD+P in a collaborative effort with WCS’ Exhibition & Graphic Arts Department led the coordination of the exhibit design, lighting, audio visual elements, parallel interaction features and life support systems, as well as restoration of the existing base building.
