dD+P and its design team provided full architectural and engineering services in a collaborative effort to restore and reimagine the exhibit spaces at the New York Aquarium that were damaged during Hurricane Sandy.
The new Sea Change exhibit appropriately centers around climate change, focusing on the impacts of rising sea level on marine wildlife and strategies for mitigation. Sea Change features interactive elements that engage visitors with these concepts, one of which demonstrates how far penguins must now swim out to sea to provide for their young.
The exhibit serves as a call to action, drawing connections between the impacts of climate change on humans, the species the Aquarium is home to, and the ocean ecosystem which surrounds New York.
dD+P in a collaborative effort with WCS’ Exhibition & Graphic Arts Department led the coordination of the exhibit design, lighting, audio visual elements, and life support systems required to sustain Sea Change’s black-footed penguins, harbor seals, sea otters and sea lions, as well as restoration of the existing base building.
