This new building for synthetic chemistry research has been designed on the best features of state-of–the-art facilities from industry. 16 laboratories on four floors with 198 fume hoods are served by adjacent wedge-shaped service risers. Office towers subdivide the south elevation and rise to become individual roof top plant rooms capped off by funnel-shaped lead-clad chimneys, echoing Bristol’s shipbuilding heritage. The laboratories are positioned in the centre of the building and the clean corridor enjoys splendid views out over the city centre. The building takes its organic shape by filling every inch of the extremely tight site. We acted as both architects and project managers for the University.
