What began as an intervention to improve accessibility, the project evolved into a complete transformation to create an inspiring place of worship.
By rotating the sanctuary, reorienting the main entry, and reshaping the courtyard, the design profoundly changed the worship day procession. This also reoriented the Bimah to face towards Jerusalem and the materials chosen resonate with religious significance. An operable, wood partition wall divides the space between the sanctuary and the lobby improves flexibility of space and accommodates for both smaller gatherings and larger events. The existing light-filled stair, previously shuttered behind closed doors, was opened up and connected to the new entrance.
Inside the sanctuary, a sculpted ceiling floats around the existing beams to visually increase the ceiling height within the space. Lighting is concealed in the coves, emphasizing the wave-like curves of the ceiling, to create a welcoming and bright sanctuary for the community.
