Projections estimate Manhattan’s population will increase by a million
people over the next ten years, which is the equivalent of the entire
city of Boston’s population within New York’s already crowded borders. PLANYC 2030, Mayor Bloomberg's call to action for the city's population crisis, puts forward the issue of new housing but does not suggest an architectural solution. The Tower in the Park typology is an old solution to the problem of
public housing. The stark contrast between the tall towers and the
flat park space does not address the relationship between public and
private. The open spaces foster interaction,
while the towers separate. Our proposal maximizes the green space in these models by developing a prototype that is deployable across the city.By completely filling out the site, the architecture is required to
apply a new set of rules about the amounts and types of communal space
required, the interaction between units, and the amount of light and
air that can pass through to the ground level. The design is flexible
in terms of its variability and takes its inspiration from a canopy
structure: a forest of units will that can grow from a single piece of
geometry.
