The Sundsvall New Arts Centre is situated on the northern edge of the Stone Town of Sundsvall, on the bank of the Selger river. In this prominent location the new building, together with the existing Kulturmagasinet, will establish a cultural centre for Norrland as well as a landmark for the town.
The building's design takes the shape of a raised landscape, forming a new meeting place at the intersection of the urban living axis and the events axis. On its west side the building opens up to the new Fisktorget piazza and the green axis along the river, and on the east side a cut in the slope and a raised volume create a focal point on the seafront and along the new E4 esplanade. This gives the building a scale matching that of the Stone Town, turning it into an iconographic structure that complements the prominent location and the programme.
At the same time, the newly pedestrianised Fisktorget piazza, now screened from the cold sea winds, has been transformed into a pleasant rendezvous setting for any time of the day.
Under the raised landscape, the main stages have been arranged in a linear fashion, alongside the foyer and the restaurant, which are completely transparent on the side of the new piazza. The main entrance connects with the transparent zone and also gives access to the Kulturmagasinet, allowing visitors and staff to move freely between the two component parts of the building. The smaller black boxes are located on the first floor above the foyer, and with their use of material and position provide a striking feature on the piazza side.
The linear arrangement of the main stages ensures that access to the theatres is optimal for audiences, performers, and stage materials alike. At the rear, the main stages connect directly to the delivery zone and the backstage functions.
The staff has been given a separate entrance on the south side of the building. The administrative areas and other offices are located centrally on the second floor, where they have a splendid view of the sea or the river. An aerial walkway at this level provides a second connection, allowing the staff easy access between the building sections, and providing a means of moving administrative functions to the new building. The clustering and interconnection of the staff areas, workshop areas, and backstage areas encourage informal meetings.
The reddish brown natural stone pattern of the piazza continues into the foyer with a similar type of stone floor, this time of anthracite colour. The wall separating the foyer from the main stages consists of light, bare concrete in which colourful openings provide access to the theatres and the service zone containing the toilets, cloakrooms, and the box office. Above the foyer the small black boxes are suspended behind the glass facade, looking out onto the piazza. The black boxes feature a double shell, with the outer wall all around using matte translucent glass. Behind the glass, lighting systems illuminate the boxes in different colours according to the nature of the activity taking place inside the box, or to help create a certain type of atmosphere in the foyer. The result is a varied and lively prospect from the piazza that complements the various activities taking place at the New Arts Centre.
