This 1970’s House is located in a quiet equestrian patch of Nerang on the Gold Coast. The owner/builder brief was to transform it into a contemporary and comfortable five-bedroom family home.
The existing house presents an unapologetic and dated facade to the street. It turns its back on the serene bushland falling away from its back door; essentially a box without any connection to its context or the potential benefits of the daylight, ventilation and views.
Internally, many of the spaces retained their original decor within an expansive yet confused double storey arrangement. A lack of permeability and articulation of height created an introverted and claustrophobic interior, despite the generous proportions and floor area.
We were approached by the owner builders to help update and make sense of the spaces within the existing volume and to transform the existing exterior by creating new, appropriate connections to its context – and to do so in a way that enabled them to manage the alterations and additions themselves on a tight budget.
The result is transforming this tired old house and the clients’ enjoyment of it beyond all expectation.
