Urban planning in Cologne
A citizens initiative called ' Adresse Neptunplatz EV ' in cooperation with the city cologne
open space furniture, urban planning and for the first time 8 new lampshades as a temporary installation
Due to its prominent position, the Neptunplaza is used and noticed as an open space of meeting and dwell on. 2004, citizens founded the „Adresse Neptunplatz e.V.“ association for revitalization of the most popular and huge open space in Cologne Ehrenfeld. With temporary events, installations and building actions like an unique out-door furniture, extraordinary illumination and new greening it was possible to transfer the main abition of this initiative to create this open space to a place of social meeting. So the initiative did not only create a central stage of public life for all citizens, they also got admission with the first award of the established Cologne architecture week „Plan 04_Forum for current architecture“.
Right now 8 usual city lanterns are covered in special red lampshades. These massiv lampshades are decorating this open space as flower tubs, which seem to look down the whole square and during daytime as well as at nighttime they transfer their own charming character to every visitor. This project did already started in 2013 with so called preproduction models. After great receptions and appreciations of all citizens, the city district 'Ehrenfeld' supported the improvement and the further development of the urban space. Due to this achievement the architect, Robert Wetzels, started with his design and development for these lampshades free of charge.
This project is an improvement of the appearance of the city cologne and invites the citizens to join and dwell on this open space at any time, as well as it transfers a comfortable feeling to everybody during their stay.
This Highlight is made up as an temporary installation during the advent and spring season.
