The project involved the renovation of an old factory site, presenting the challenge of transforming a stark, industrial space into a warm, inviting café that fosters a sense of connection between people and nature. The design team aimed to seamlessly blend natural elements, traditional motifs, and indigenous materials, blurring the boundaries between the café's interior and its surrounding environment. This approach creates a harmonious fusion of modernity and local identity.
The architectural concept begins with the reinterpretation of a traditional pitched roof, with its diagonal line positioned to evoke the imagery of clouds floating above. This design feature is inspired by Ba Den Mountain, a timeless symbol of resilience and protection in Tay Ninh. The roofline directs its lowest point towards the entrance, creating an intimate and inviting proportion that welcomes visitors. Contrasting with the minimalist structure, warm oak doors and recessed plywood panels soften the entry, enhancing the tactile experience.
Central to the spatial experience is the winding “river”, a design metaphor for the Vam Co River that flows through Tay Ninh, symbolising life, continuity and the nurturing connection between people and their natural surroundings. This lush “river” flows through the space, framed by rough stone slabs that serve as both seating and resting areas. The interplay of blue tones with golden yellows and earthy browns reflects the image of water winding through rice paddies, a nod to the region’s agricultural heritage.
The blue and yellow color palette also draws inspiration from the architectural hues of the Toa Thanh Cao Dai, a revered spiritual landmark in Tay Ninh. This deliberate integration of colors not only elevates the café’s visual appeal but also establishes a profound connection to the region’s cultural heritage. The result is a space that transcends aesthetics, offering visitors a meaningful and immersive experience rooted in the identity of the homeland.
