A new house designed for the Nelsons, on the sandy soils above Waikanae Beach, overlooking the South Pacific seas and Kapiti Island. The owners, in retiring from their Hawkes Bay farm, wanted to keep the sense of materiality and voluminous spaces found in rural out-buildings in New Zealand. A concrete spine wall runs the length of the gallery space and views out to the sea and Island are captured via large windows at the cantilevered end of the house. Two roof forms collide (in an interlocking fashion) across the central fireplace and dining area. American White Oak is used on the ceiling, floor and in furniture recesses to the bedrooms. Stained Cedar weatherboards and dark ply cladding complete the outside envelope, defining the roles of the split forms - the relaxed agenda versus the working wing.
