We designed this common central open space for a new residential development on the former site of the Brooklyn Navy Brig with a team of architects and developers. The development includes low-income housing, supportive housing, and market-rate housing as well as retail space and other community facilities. Our design organizes the development around a central landscape experience. Common gardens, open to all residents, provide a strong community focus for the complex. A playground, wooden pergola, and paved plazas with benches and table seating all face inward toward a large linear lawn. Apartment tower community rooms and individual townhouses both have direct access to the landscape spine of the site. Stormwater is directed to a central runnel that empties into an infiltration basin.
Navy Green won the 2017 ULI New York Award for Excellence in Development and is a LEED Certified Neighborhood Development.
