New sports facilities for education and specialised training at Haakonsvern Navy Base near Bergen. The facilities are located on the shore edge within the existing Navy Base. The building is used by both the Naval Forces and the 5000 miltary and civillian staff employed at the Base. The facilities inside consist of a multi-purpose hall, a 25 m swimming pool, a 25 m special pool, several group training rooms, strength training room and a climbing wall. Outside amenities include an artificial pitch and running track, an obstacle course, ball park, volleyball courts and jetties for climbing and assault training. An important aim has been to create a robust building with solid, maintenance-free materials that can withstand aggresive use. Exposed and untreated concrete, brick, unglazed tiles and oiled wood are used extensively in the interior. The swimming pools are constructed from stainless steel. The exterior is mainly white polymer composite panels, zinc standing seam cladding and oiled wood. The panels are arranged in a shell formation that associates with the maritim setting, while at the same time giving a lightness and scale to the large façades.
