LIVING THE EXAMPLE
The project is part of an ambitious national programme to improve the education in Uganda. National Teachers Colleges (NTC) are involved to educate the future teachers of Uganda. The approach for NTC is the teachers becoming the example for a better Uganda. Living and learning at NTC campus reflects just that. This means NTC is not only about education but extends to hygiene, healthy food, and developing knowledge in balance with the environment and natural resources. Within this ambition the integral master plan and sustainable architecture is developed in a participative process with all stakeholders. NTC accommodates a growth for doubling the number of students by renovation of existing buildings and new buildings for among other student housing, teachers housing, educational activities, green infrastructure, sports facilities, sustainable energy, waste recycling, and food production. All buildings are designed according our ‘Spatial Energy Design’ methodology resulting in buildings with a comfortable interior climate completely naturally ventilated without any use of artificial cooling. Special features are the use of local materials such as bamboo, and local bricks. No air conditioning is required, and buildings still have a cool feeling temperature inside. This is due to a unique zig-zag facade design.
