The Nanotechnology Center of Excellence located in Homagama forms the epicenter of a National Nanotechnology Park that is a result of SLINTEC's aims to create an ideal space for 'thinking'. The building marks a milestone for Sri Lanka's innovation and learning goals.
The Nanotechnology Park will be a key feature within the 'knowledge hub' development plan in Homagama creating a unique opportunity to house research, incubation and technology commercialization in one park that is functional to both the public and private sector.
It is not only the function of the building that is benchmark but the Nanotechnology Center of Excellence has also made an impression for Sri Lankan architecture. The architectural and layout designs have been developed through sustainable principles of natural light and ventilation, low solar heat gain and passive cooling methods that are environmentally friendly and will maintain a high standard even during the operation of the facility.
Elements of all scales and sizes within the architectural language have been used in order to depict the relationship with nanotechnology as well as geometries that are closely involved in the sciences; this establishes the weight and depth of the research that is happening within the facilities. All incubation areas of the center capture the open, tranquil and freely accessible natural environment so as to create a free mindset that will enable uninterrupted idea flow to its researchers. The laboratories and research areas are of controlled environments yet linked with the exterior natural environment hence visually creating the required spatial feeling.
The Nanotechnology Center of Excellence was designed such that it turns out to be an icon in the knowledge hub of Sri Lanka and also operates as a strong catalyst in the facility's development. The delicate research and lab areas are zoned to the basement and more open areas to controlled environments on the upper levels. The building makes use of passive solar cooling methods by means of large courtyards and open corridors that are naturally ventilated.
The center is composed of ground plus two floors and also has a basement which caters to only laboratories. A grand reception and entrance lobby welcomes you into an atrium which doubles up as a gallery and/or demonstration space from where you can then proceed to experience the rest of this magnificent building. The upper floors house more laboratories, administration, executive and scientist offices and workshops and meeting rooms.
An element that contributes to the grandeur of the building is the tower that rises up --- meters into the sky creating an incredible visual impression. The driveway leading up to the entrance provides the visitor with a panoramic view of the building with its skeletal facade that represents the geometries used in the science of nanotechnology. The splendor of the building does not end with the external form and aesthetics but continues on the inside with its state of the art furniture and interior design. The laboratory furniture is of special mention and has been manufactured specifically to suit the conditions and nature of the research and other procedures conducted in these spaces.
The Nanotechnology Center of Excellence is not only phase one of the development of the nanotechnology park but has also laid the foundation for
