THE IDEA
The central idea
of our composition for the “NEW LIBRARY OF THE CZECH REPUBLIC” is a big,
”extrovert” PYRAMID volume, in iron and glass,(comprising the reading-rooms),
which contains in it’s centre an ”introvert” closed PARALLELEPIPED building (comprising the book-stacks). The
synthesis of these two structures intends to express the difference in facing
the two principal meanings of a Library:
a. the notion of
the preservation of the books and the knowledge
b. the communication
of this knowledge
to the world.
In the present
PROJECT these two controversial notions are expressed in a symbolical as well
as a functional manner, by way of being organized in two different volumes, the
one into the other.
The keeping-preservation
is represented by a well protected seclusion in the inner PARALLELEPIPED :THE brain, in the centre of a PYRAMIDED shape : THE CORPS. The last being
an extrovert corps which houses the spaces of information communication, studying,
learning and relaxation and serving the second notion:
COMMUNICATION WITH THE WORLD.
THE MASTER PLAN
The building of
the New National Library in Prague covers a surface of 86 x 91 m2, in
continuity with the existing blocks towards West and upon the building line of
the Milady Horakove Avenue as it regards the ground floor, while the
underground floors follow the obligatory setting-back from the future
underground car-road.
THE COMPOSITION OF THE ELEMENTS

In the
“heart” of the composition, lies an “oblong core”
It is an
eight-storey structure intending to house the Collection Management and
Preservation Division, the Library system Department, Information Technology
and part of Library Operation and Management Division, Technical support
Department. The core runs the whole length of the plot in the direction E-W,
while its ground floor creates a “pedestrian avenue” for the public zone. This
“avenue” starts from the N-W edge of the plot, where the main entrance to the
Library is, and reaches the East side, where it meets the pedestrian road of
the park.

The
ground floor is the public zone with all the services of the project
(Exhibition, Information, Magazines, Journals, Catalogues, Shop, Video, Café,
Relaxation, Book lending and Accesses to the reading rooms. The ground floor
may operate independently and out of the opening hours of the Library. At the
same time it is foreseen its continuity, towards the EAST, in the direction of the
adjacent plot, where is the future extension of the Library.
WRAPPING
The oblong central
axis-core is over covered by a prismatic metal super construction which creates
at the North and South sides of the “core”, two large ground-level spaces for
the Public Services Division, with Natural Lighting, while it covers in the
same time.
