The design of Nappo does not attempt to produce a nostalgic representation of the traditional Italian trattoria. Instead, this cultural reference is reinterpreted through a stripped-back, functional, and contemporary architectural language. Drawing from the social atmosphere of trattoria culture, the project proposes a spatial experience rooted in timeless, refined simplicity. The generous volume of the space, situated within the Tersane İstanbul campus, was approached as a strong design potential to be brought into dialogue with the human scale. The macro scale of the interior was balanced through a series of architectural layers organised along both horizontal and vertical axes. A timber grid system integrated into reflective ceiling panels introduces rhythm and directionality to the space, while the accompanying solid timber columns operate as frames that fragment the volume visually and extend the sense of depth. The spatial relationship between the human scale and the main volume was established through heavy-textured fabric canopies that descend at a gentle angle over the seating areas. These elements do more than define visual boundaries — they filter light, absorb sound, and carve out sheltered sub-spaces within the high-ceilinged structure. The plan is organised through a hierarchical balance of fixed and moveable elements. Within an interior palette of white and warm yellow tones, natural marble tables and leather-upholstered timber chairs offer an adaptable configuration that supports the flexibility of the space. In contrast, the substantial service stations — clad in timber and natural-finish surfaces — serve as fixed anchors within the layout. Linear ceramic strips on the floor extend the design language across the ground plane, guiding circulation and shaping the visual flow. The lighting strategy deliberately avoids a homogenous, single-layer approach, instead constructing a multi-layered atmospheric effect. Rather than functioning as decoration, lighting is treated as an architectural instrument that shapes the mood of the space. Pendant shades rising above the service islands create sculptural focal points, while metal-detailed wall sconces integrated into the timber structural elements and table-level lighting bring the intimate atmosphere of trattoria culture down to the scale of individual experience. NAPPO is not the outcome of a formal or stylistic exercise — it is a holistic project shaped by the relationships between structural elements, human scale, and atmospheric layering. Within the historically charged context of Tersane İstanbul, it offers a spatial proposition that does not replicate the past, but instead proposes something strong, calm, and enduring — built through quality materials and a contemporary spatial language capable of acquiring character over time.
