A house that treads lightly on the Napeague dunescape. The massing was developed to maximize buildable area on the site given stringent zoning restraints. Two volumes are propped Above the site so the land rolls beneath the home. One of the entrances features a site-specific art installation by Jenny Holzer. The elevated living spaces frame commanding views over the surroundings. The result is a house built with rather than on the land.
The sawtooth roof is a reinterpretation of a zoning requirement that calls for pitched roofs. It creates a series of openings that let natural light into the interiors and houses enough solar panels to power the entire building. At time of construction, it was the largest residential solar array in New York.
