In addition to the key protections of hutong that have been dressed up as tourism models and dignitaries’applications within second ring road of Beijing, most of the residential houses are just large compounds. No. 3 courtyard of Nanyang Hutong was originally a working studio rented by a group of musicians drifting to Beijing from other cities around the nation, so the "chaos" in it can easily be imagined.
With less than three hundred square meters, the function of the courtyard is very simple: small living room, tea room, restaurant, chess room, cinema, wine cellar, warehouse, and a meditation room which was “stole out” by later designers.
This yard had a few common failings among original courtyard houses: cold and humid, lack of sunshine, poor ventilation and the unpractical depth scale for people’s living habits nowadays. In terms of functional layout, we had to arrange the space into corresponding scale and function according to the existing layout. The windows of the traditional brick house facing the courtyard had been turned into a wide expansion and most of them were designed into glass partitions. By Calculating the amount of ventilation, the appropriate increase of the windows on north side has resolved the problem of passive ventilation. We also embellished traditional colors with environmental light to enhancing the visual coherence between interior and exterior. Plus, we added linear lights, spotted ground lights, floor lamps and table lamps with mid-level light due to the inadequacy of arranging lamps onto wooden ceiling.
The designing process of Evolution Design is a process of constant discovery of the problem, paying great attention to the expressions of material texture, light, environment and people. On the other hand, leaving "blank spaces" is very crucial when needed, being flexible to increase or decrease, allowing us to interaction with the space. That is how we find the interest of life aesthetics!
