Nampa House is a restaurant rooted in a culinary tradition passed down through a noble family for over 200 years, offering a unique connection to its history and heritage. The designer drew inspiration from the natural surroundings of the original Nampa House and its everyday objects. Located in Naju, a region renowned for its traditional craftsmanship—including weaving, carpentry, dyeing, and basketry—the design of Nampa House reflects these local artisanal qualities. For example, a translucent curtain resembling woven linen divides the hall and private rooms, allowing for psychological connection with the open space while maintaining a sense of intimacy and privacy.
The overall design of the dining hall aims to bring the outdoors inside. Elements such as rocks and landscape, along with objects inspired by nature, evoke the image of birds resting by a stream near Nampa House. A prominent feature of the space is a painting of Keumsung Mountain in Naju, created by artist Kim Su, which spans an entire wall. The silhouette of Keumsung Mountain bears a striking resemblance to Samgak Mountain in Seoul, and by layering the two mountains on a sheer fabric, the piece creates the illusion of these two iconic mountains standing together in the same space, bridging past and present. The color palette of the space is inspired by the earthy tones of clay and wood found in the walls and columns of Nampa House, with a darker-hued column standing at the center of the hall, symbolizing the natural aging process of the house’s structure over time.
A segment of the wall features a traditional wood-burning technique, showcasing the history of cooking over an open fire. This artwork is part of the Danmyun collection, a collaboration with National Intangible Cultural Heritage master Yungjo Kim. The term Danmyun, meaning "cross-section" in Korean, reflects the idea that everything on earth leaves traces, and these traces are the residue of time. By blending elements of the past with contemporary sensibilities, the designer has created a space where history and future coexist in harmony, offering a sensory journey through time.
